Großenrode was first mentioned in the year 978 as 'Nywenrode'. In the year 1276 the village was described as 'parish village'. The village probably had a church at that time already.
The present church was inaugurated in the year 1276. Inside the church is the family tomb of the earls of Hardenberg.

The village Großenrode is situated ca 5km southeast of Mohringen and has a population of 400 (status May 2006). The village Großenrode is part of the community Moringen and district Northeim since the incorporation in the year 1974.
